Identification of enteric viruses in oral swabs from children with acute gastroenteritis
Journal of Molecular Diagnostics Oct 24, 2017
Zhuo R, et al. - This study aim at assessing if oral swabs are a suitable alternative specimen to stool specimens in children with acute gastroenteritis. Oral swabs prove to have lower sensitivity, this makes stool as a preferable specimen to detect enteric viruses. However, if stool specimens are unavailable oral swabs can be considered as a suitable specimen with their high specificity. Nonetheless, a confirmative test of stool specimens seems necessary in case of negative oral swabs.
