American Heart Journal Aug 23, 2019
Holder T, Sullivan AE, Truong T, et al. - Researchers intended to gain insights into the modern inpatient experience as well as practice patterns of the pulmonary embolism (PE) population as a whole. Participants were retrospectively selected according to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, codes, and included all acute PE cases managed at a single large, multihospital academic health system from January 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017. Total patients included were 829, with intermediate or high-risk PE detected in 372 (44.8%) patients. The mean age was 62.1 years old. A history of malignancy was present in 42.1% of patients. Invasive PE therapies were required to treat 6.0%, 26.1% needed intensive care unit admission, and in-hospital death or hospice discharge was experienced by 9.0%. Although advanced therapeutics are available, still, the reported healthcare utilization was substantial and mortality was high.
