Identification and management of Shigella infection in children with diarrhoea: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The Lancet Global Health Nov 16, 2017
Tickell KD, et al. - The authors performed this systematically review to assess Shigella-associated and dysentery-associated mortality, the diagnostic value of dysentery for the identification of Shigella infection. Furthermore, they evaluated the efficacy of antibiotics for children with Shigella or dysentery or both. Among children infected with Shigella who present without a bloody stool, current WHO guidelines appeared to manage dysentery effectively but could miss opportunities to reduce mortality. Further studies needed to quantify potential decreases in mortality and morbidity associated with antibiotic therapy for children with non-dysenteric Shigella infection.
