Ideal cardiovascular health metrics and major cardiovascular events in patients with prediabetes and diabetes
JAMA Cardiology Sep 26, 2019
Wang T, Lu J, Su Q, et al. - Researchers assessed the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) development in correlation with ideal cardiovascular health metrics (ICVHMs) in participants with prediabetes or diabetes vs those with normal glucose regulation in a nationwide, population-based, prospective cohort study. They included 111,765 participants without CVD or cancer at baseline, and assessed the composite of incident fatal or nonfatal CVD—including cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke, and hospitalized or treated heart failure. Findings revealed lower or no significant excess CVD risks among participants with prediabetes or diabetes who achieved ≥ 5 ICVHMs vs participants with normal glucose regulation. The researchers emphasized the necessity of encouraging adherence to ICVHMs for the prevention of CVD events among patients with prediabetes or diabetes.
