ICU survivors have a substantial higher risk of developing new chronic conditions compared to a population-based control group
Critical Care Medicine Feb 22, 2019
van Beusekom I, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers used a national health insurance claims database as well as a national quality registry for ICUs in order to report the types and prevalence of chronic conditions in an ICU population vs a population-based control group during the year before ICU admission. They also compared these two groups with respect to the risk of developing new chronic conditions. This study included 81 Dutch ICUs, and participants comprised 56,760 patients who sought an ICU admission during 2013, as well as 75,232 subjects included in the control group. Compared with the control group, a higher risk of developing chronic conditions was seen among ICU patients; they also have more chronic conditions in the year prior to admission to the ICU. ICU follow-up care was recommended on the basis of the observed high prevalence of chronic conditions and the increased risk of developing new chronic conditions.
