ICU-acquired weakness, diaphragm dysfunction and long-term outcomes of critically ill patients
Annals of Intensive Care Jan 11, 2020
Saccheri C, Morawiec E, Delemazure J, et al. - By performing this ancillary study derived from an observational cohort study, including patients under mechanical ventilation enrolled at the time of their first spontaneous breathing trial, researchers looked for a link between diaphragm dysfunction and negative long-term consequences and determined if the coexistence of diaphragm dysfunction and ICU-acquired weakness has a specific link with 2-year survival and health-related quality of life. The survival analysis was performed on 69 of the 76 patients enrolled in the original study and interviews were performed in 40. Findings revealed a poor 2-year survival related to ICU-acquired weakness but not related to diaphragm dysfunction in critically ill patients.
