Iatrogenic subglottic tracheal stenosis after tracheostomy and endotracheal intubation: A cohort observational study of more severity in keloid phenotype

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Apr 18, 2019

Chang E, et al. - Researchers compared subglottic tracheal stenosis, its incidence as well as severity, in keloid and non-keloid patients after iatrogenic tracheal injury, especially tracheostomy. Participants were recruited from the People’s Hospital of Zhengzhou University, China. Keloid or non-keloid groups were formed among 133 patients who developed tracheal stenosis after intubation and/or tracheostomy. These groups were compared with respect to Myer and Cotton grading of tracheal stenosis, time-to-onset of airway stenosis, and treatment outcome. The development of iatrogenic tracheal stenosis of greater severity, with poorer treatment outcome, was more likely to be seen among tracheostomized patients with keloid phenotype, and, therefore, while performing tracheostomy in keloid subjects, greater cautions may be needed.
