Hypothermia, pH, and postoperative red blood cell transfusion in massively transfused adult cardiac surgery patients: A retrospective cohort study
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Jan 06, 2018
Williams B, et al. - This study was performed in massively transfused adult cardiac surgery patients to analyze the links between hypothermia and pH at surgery end and postoperative red blood cell (RBC) transfusion. In this population, no association was observed, between hypothermia at surgery end and postoperative RBC transfusion, however, pH derangements were found to be related to increased postoperative transfusion, ultimately suggesting that in these patients, normalization of blood pH may be crucial in reducing postoperative bleeding.
