Hyponatremia, falls and bone fractures: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Clinical Endocrinology Jun 30, 2018
Corona G, et al. - An extensive Medline, Embase and Cochrane search was performed along with meta-analysis to compare falls and bone fractures between patients with and without hyponatremia. Out of 216 retrieved articles, 15 studies satisfied inclusion criteria encompassing an aggregate of 51,879 subjects, of whom 2,329 were hyponatremic. This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated that hyponatremia was correlated with an increased risk of falls and bone fractures. It was observed that the clinical, social and economic relevance of such association was strengthened by the increased incidence of hyponatremia in older people.
