Hypokalemia during antibiotic treatment for bone and joint infections

European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology Oct 13, 2017

Falcone C, et al. - This single-center study assessed the incidence and risk factors for hypokalemia in association with treatment with multidrug therapy for bone and joint infections (BJIs). Old age and simultaneous use of diuretics were identified as the factors associated with a frequent appearance of severe hypokalemia in those treated with multiple antibiotic therapy for BJIs. Intensive antibiotic treatment in patients with these risk factors deserves particular caution due to possible increase in mortality risk in the short term.
