Hypertriglyceridemia in statin-treated US adults: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Journal of Clinical Lipidology Dec 06, 2018
Fan W, et al. - Researchers determined the prevalence of elevated triglyceride (TG) levels by statin use, as well as the associated 10-year predicted atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk, in this study involving 9,593 US adults aged > 20 years (219.9 million projected) in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2007-2014. By statin use, the proportions of TG categories (< 150 mg/dL, 150-199 mg/dL, 200-499 mg/dL , and ≥500 mg/dL) were determined. They also focused on ASCVD risk and number of events for 10-year duration. Findings revealed suboptimal TG levels in one-fourth of US adults overall, including nearly one-third of those on statin therapy. In those with TG levels > 150 mg/dL, the expected ASCVD events that could occur over the next decade were over 3 million. Approximately 1 million events are expected to occur in statin users.
