Hypertonic saline has a prolonged effect on mucociliary clearance in adults with cystic fibrosis
Journal of Cystic Fibrosis Jan 25, 2018
Trimble AT, et al. - Inhaled hypertonic saline (HS) has been shown to increase mucociliary clearance (MCC) and improve clinical outcomes in adults and adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF). Researchers herein characterized the durability of the MCC response to HS in adults with CF. They found a prolonged impact of a single dose of HS on MCC, lasting at least for 4 h, in adults with CF, relative to healthy adults. This may explain its clinical efficacy in this population.
