Hypertension Feb 21, 2020
Scheres LJJ, Lijfering WM, Groenewegen NFM, et al. - Given an increased arterial thrombotic risk in later life related to hypertension during pregnancy and preeclampsia has been reported, and it remains largely unexplored that if these complications are related to the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) on the short term following pregnancy and on the long term, that is, outside pregnancy, and therefore, researchers joined the Dutch perinatal registry (Perined) to anticoagulation clinics in order to identify women with at least 1 pregnancy as well as their first VTE risk in this nationwide cohort analysis. The reference group included women with uncomplicated pregnancies. A median follow-up of 13.7 years was performed among 1,919,918 women for a total of 24,531,118 person-years. Findings revealed an elevated VTE risk during pregnancy and postpartum period and in the 13 years after in correlation with hypertension during pregnancy and preeclampsia.
