Hypertension and multiple cardiovascular risk factors increase the risk for retinal vein occlusions: Results from the Gutenberg Retinal Vein Occlusion Study
Journal of Hypertension Jun 06, 2019
Ponto KA, et al. – Via conducting an observational case–control study, researchers examined patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) to assess the relevance of multiple risk factors in these patients as triggers for RVO. They also included the same number of matched controls in this study. Thrombophilic, cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and drug-related risk factors were evaluated. Overall, 92 patients with RVO were included. The investigators found a link between systemic hypertension and RVO. Hypertension with dyslipidemia and hyperhomocysteinemia and high levels of factor VIII were identified as the most frequent combinations of risk factors. Cardiovascular risk factors are more important than other risk factors for the presence of RVO, according to findings. RVO risk increased by ~40% and by 70% with any additional risk factor and with any additional cardiovascular risk factor, respectively.
