Hyperoxemia and excess oxygen use in early acute respiratory distress syndrome: Insights from the LUNG SAFE study
Critical Care Apr 10, 2020
Madotto F, Rezoagli E, Pham T, et al. - Given the existence of concerns about the prevalence as well as influence of unnecessary oxygen use in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), researchers addressed this topic in patient population with ARDS taking part in the Large observational study to UNderstand the Global impact of Severe Acute respiratory FailurE (LUNG SAFE) study. This investigation represents a secondary analysis of the LUNG SAFE study. The goal here was to assess the prevalence as well as the results related to hyperoxemia on day 1, sustained hyperoxemia, and excessive oxygen use among patients experiencing early ARDS. Findings revealed that hyperoxemia and excess oxygen use were both prevalent in early ARDS but were most commonly non-sustained. In this cohort, no link was identified between hyperoxemia or excessive oxygen use and patient outcome.
