Hyperinflated lungs compress the heart during expiration in COPD patients: A new finding on dynamic-ventilation computed tomography

Xu Y, et al. - In this study, using four-dimensional computed tomography (CT), researchers assessed smokers for dynamic changes in heart size during the respiratory cycle. Furthermore, the association of these changes with airflow limitation in smokers was also investigated. Smaller heart size on dynamic-ventilation CT was evident in COPD patients vs non-COPD smokers. Also, COPD patients had abnormal cardiac compression during expiration.
