Hyperglycemia induces attention and gait deficits in diabetic mellitus patients

Sattar L et al. – This study evaluated the effects of transient hyperglycemia on attentional functions and gait in diabetes mellitus patients and concluded that transient hyperglycemia induces attention and gait deficits.
Methods
- Case–control study of patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus.
- Patients (n = 17) were assessed for 3 visual tests and 1 visual and auditory attention test and 10 patients performed a tandem gait test.
- Matched patients performed the same test under normoglycemic conditions
Results
- The mean response time for the 4 tests increased significantly by 53.5 ms and the total distance travelled of the center of pressure increased significantly by 102 mm during transient hyperglycemia.
