Hyperchloremia is not associated with AKI or death in septic shock patients: Results of a post hoc analysis of the “HYPER2S” trial
Annals of Intensive Care Aug 29, 2019
Commereuc M, et al. - Researchers focused on renal function and survival of patients with septic shock in correlation with serum chloride concentration in this post hoc analysis of the “HYPER2S” trial database. Resuscitation with 0.9% or 3% saline was randomly provided to 434 patients with septic shock. Up to 72 h, metabolic parameters were measured. They assessed metabolic influences of hyperchloremia (> 110 mmol/L) stratified for hyperlactatemia (> 2 mmol/L). They analyzed 413 patients for the link between chloride parameters, day-28 mortality and acute kidney injury (AKI), using Cox models. According to the findings, metabolic acidosis was more frequent but no link was found between hyperchloremia and an increased risk for AKI or mortality.
