Hydroxychloroquine treatment during pregnancy in lupus patients is associated with lower risk of preeclampsia
Lupus Jun 15, 2019
Seo MR, et al. - Researchers examined how hydroxychloroquine [HCQ: a mainstay in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)] influence pregnancy outcomes in patients with SLE. This retrospective cohort study comprised 151 pregnancies in 122 patients with SLE (80 pregnancies in the HCQ treatment group and 71 pregnancies in the HCQ nontreatment group). The HCQ treatment group vs the HCQ nontreatment group had significantly less complicated preeclampsia (7.5% vs 19.7%, p = 0.032) and significantly greater neonatal birth weight (2757.0 ± 583.5 g vs 2542.3 ± 908.3 g). This suggests the efficacy of HCQ treatment in improving pregnancy outcomes in SLE patients with about 90% reduction of preeclampsia.
