Human papillomavirus infection and tumor microenvironment are associated with the microbiota in patients with oropharyngeal cancers—pilot study
Head & Neck Jul 29, 2021
Zakrzewski M, Gannon OM, Panizza BJ, et al. - Existence of differences in the oral microbiota between human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive and HPV-negative patients has been demonstrated in the previous microbiome studies of oropharyngeal cancer, this topic is explored herein. This study involved 13 patients with oropharyngeal cancer (eight HPV-positive, five HPV-negative). Saliva, normal tissue, and tumor biopsies were collected from participants. Findings revealed that overall microbial community and bacterial richness differed significantly between oropharyngeal patients based on HPV status. The observations indicate that microbiomes differ significantly in patients with oropharyngeal cancer based on HPV status.
