Human cytomegalovirus seroprevalence and titres in solid organ transplant recipients and transplant donors in Seoul, South Korea
BMC Infectious Diseases Nov 15, 2019
La Y, et al. - Given the possibility for poor outcomes in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients and cardiovascular diseases in the general population in correlation to human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection or disease, researchers examined HCMV seroprevalence and titre with regard to age distribution and compared these between SOT recipients and healthy individuals in South Korea. In this retrospective review, 2,184 SOT recipients and 3,015 healthy transplant donors with anti-HCMV immunoglobulin G (IgG) results from Severance Hospital in Seoul were assessed. SOT recipients had significantly higher overall IgG seroprevalence and titres than healthy donors (98.7% vs 88.6%). School-aged children and adolescents exhibited the lowest HCMV seropositivity. In SOT recipients and healthy donors, adults aged ≥ 41 years had increased frequency of seropositivity to ≥ 90%. Higher HCMV seroprevalence was observed in independent correlation to age. Low HCMV seropositive rate was independently observed in the healthy donor group. These findings suggest the value of IgG testing for assessing an intermediate serostatus risk of posttransplant HCMV infection and disease for most adult SOT recipients in South Korea.
