HPV status in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in the United States: A SEER database study
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Sep 02, 2019
Wotman M, Oh EJ, Ahn S, et al. - In nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), researchers studied the etiologic and prognostic role of human papilloma virus (HPV). The Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database was used to find patients diagnosed with NPC. To examine the impact of clinicopathologic predictors on HPV positivity in NPC, logistic regression was used. According to findings, positive results for HPV-associated NPC were seen in 180/517 patients with known HPV testing. While controlling for AJCC-7 stage and AJCC-7 M stage, East Asians and people over 25 were found to be less likely to have NPC associated with HPV. The results obtained from the survival analysis indicate that cause-specific survival throughout the study period did not vary considerably by HPV status but differed significantly by ethnicity group of HPV. The clinical implications of HPV in NPC are further clarified, but more research is needed.
