Davis AP, et al. - Researchers plan this study to assess the efficacy of neurologic symptoms in identifying individuals with neurosyphilis. Among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with syphilis, 4 specific neurologic symptoms (mild or greater severity photophobia, vision loss, or gait incoordination or moderate or greater severity hearing loss) are more frequent in those with a reactive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test. Regardless of HIV status, lack of symptoms does not guarantee that the CSF-VDRL is nonreactive.
