Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health Aug 06, 2019
Benedicta B, et al. - Researchers conducted this pilot study to comprehend how parents use, search for and appraise the relevance and credibility of online information relating to children's health. For this investigation, they included a practical task with parents of in-patients with subacute health conditions at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. Using an observation checklist, videos of practical tasks were analyzed. There were 22 parents involved. Four themes have been identified: Wide spectrum of online health information utilisation, techniques in searching for online health information, appraising relevance and appraising credibility. Most parents showed a wide use of online health data utilisation, from minimal to extensive. During search and appraisal, there are differences between the perceived knowledge and performance of parents, emphasising the need for education to improve eHealth literacy of parents.
