Clinical Epidemiology Feb 22, 2020
Nilsen SM, Bjorngaard JH, Carlsen F, et al. - This study intended to determine the impact of organizational pressure to discharge on 60-day mortality among hip fracture patients. Researchers included a total of 59,971 Norwegian individuals with hip fractures, who hospitalized between 2008 and 2016, aged 70 years and older. They applied data from all 5,013,773 other acute hospitalizations in the study period to estimate the hospital discharge tendency for a given day. Among hip fracture individuals, the probability of discharge raised by 5.5 percentage points per 10 percentage points increase in hospital discharges of individuals with other acute conditions. It was noted that the enhanced risk of death that could be associated to discharge from organizational causes was estimated to 3.7 percentage points. The results of this study demonstrated that discharges from organizational causes may raise the risk of death among hip fracture individuals.
