Hospitalization trends of the inflammatory bowel disease landscape: A nationwide overview of 16 years
Digestive and Liver Diseases Feb 13, 2019
Dias CC, et al. - Over 16 years, researchers assessed the hospitalization rate of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in a southern-European country and its associated costs. Between 2000 and 2015, all discharges with a primary diagnosis of Crohn’s disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC) in data provided by the Central Administration of Health Services (ACSS) were identified. Investigators found that estimated discharges for CD and UC were 31,358 and 16,669, respectively. They observed that the rate of CD hospitalization per 100,000 inhabitants increased over time while UC remained constant. During the study period, hospitalization charges for IBD increased by approximately 2.0M€, representing a significant burden on the national healthcare system. This increase was primarily due to an increase in total CD-related hospital expenditure.
