Hospital volume and long-term outcomes of pancreatic cancer: A Finnish population-based nationwide study
HPB Nov 02, 2021
Huhta H, Nortunen M, Meriläinen S, et al. - Findings demonstrate improved short- and long-term survival in relation to higher annual hospital volume of pancreatic surgery for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
Analysis of 1,514 patients who had pancreatic resection for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma in Finland; were split into quintiles depending on annual hospital volume (4-year moving average): ≤4, 5–9, 10–18, 19–36 and ≥37 resections per year.
The 5-year survival (ranging from 12% to 28%) increased with higher annual operative volume.
Relative to the highest annual volume quintile, all other quintiles showed a lower adjusted 5-year mortality (hazard ratio 1.43).
The three lowest volume quintiles had higher 30-day and 90-day mortality vs the highest quintile.
