Hospital outcomes associated with new-onset atrial fibrillation during ICU admission: A multicentre competing risks analysis
Journal of Critical Care Aug 08, 2020
Bedford JP, Gerry S, Hatch RA, et al. - This retrospective cohort study is done to determine the prognostic link of new onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) with hospital results, employing competing risks methods. This inquiry was performed in three general adult ICUs in the UK from June 2008 to December 2015, excluding cases with known prior atrial fibrillation or an arrhythmia within four hours of ICU admission. An increased duration of hospital stay and a raised rate of in-hospital mortality per unit time were reported in relation to NOAF. Increased hospital death was reported in correlation with NOAF lasting over 30 min. Overall, compared with previous reports, a stronger prognostic link between NOAF and hospital results was shown using robust methods in this study.
