Hospital length of stay by race-ethnicity and weight loss procedure types
Annals of Epidemiology Aug 31, 2018
Liu S, et al. - Researchers investigated how weight loss procedures (WLP) outcomes vary in severely obese ethnic minority groups. For this purpose, they performed a secondary analysis of records of 16+ years Florida inpatients and focused on the impact of race-ethnicity [mainly Hispanic, non-Hispanic white (NHW), NH black (NHB)] and procedure types [Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB), Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB), and Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) procedures] on hospital length of stay (LOS). They found that, compared with NHW, a greater LOS was more likely to be seen among Hispanic but less likely to be seen among NHB irrespective of WLP type in this study sample including 10,630 WLP recipients with 71% SG, 24% RYGB and 5% LAGB and 56% NHW, 21% NHB, 20% Hispanic, and 3% other. LAGB patients were more likely but RYGB patients were significantly less likely to have increased LOS than SG.
