Hospital adverse events and perioperative outcomes in bilateral direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Oct 16, 2019
Villa JM, Pannu TS, Higuera CA, et al. - A consecutive series of 347 primary bilateral direct anterior approach THA (DAA-THA) (n = 204) done by two surgeons in a single institution were involved in a retrospective chart review in order to contrast hospital length of stay (LOS), discharge character, hospital adverse events-major; minor, and transfusion rates among simultaneous and staged bilateral DAA-THA. Significantly younger individuals and a greater proportion of males was found in the simultaneous-group when contrasted with the staged-groups, and it revealed notable longer LOS, a lower proportion of the home-discharge and a higher (overall) rate of adverse incidents and transfusions. Nevertheless, most transfusions were autologous in nature. Hence, the data from this study explicate that other than concurrently, bilateral DAA-THAs done in a staged fashion have a shorter hospital LOS and reduced rates of adverse incidents and overall transfusions. However, in some of the individuals, simultaneous surgery should still be weighed as an alternative.
