Hospital admissions for acute throat and deep neck infections vs tonsillectomy rates in Germany
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Jun 21, 2019
Windfuhr JP, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective longitudinal population-based cohort study to assess trends in hospital admissions in Germany for acute infections of the upper airway and deep neck in the context of the number of tonsil-related surgical procedures between 2005 and 2017. The study comprised all unplanned admissions for acute pharyngitis/tonsillitis, abscess formation of the peritonsillar or retropharyngeal/parapharyngeal space. The negative correlation between chronic tonsillitis admissions and emergency admissions, as well as between elective and emergency operations, was significant. The number of abscess drainage procedures for transoral parapharyngeal and retropharygeal abscess has not changed significantly. With regard to upper airway infections and deep neck spaces, German Hospitals must prepare strategies through unplanned admissions and emergency operations to the increasing challenge.
