Hospital-acquired complications in intensive care unit patients with diabetes: A before-and-after study of a conventional vs liberal glucose control protocol
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Mar 21, 2019
Luethi N, et al. - In this prospective before-and-after study, researchers investigated whether a liberal glycemic target in intensive care unit patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) is related to the more common incidence of complications. Hospital-acquired complications were compared among 400 critically ill patients with DM who received liberal (glucose target: 10-14 mmol/L; n=165 [82.5%]) vs conventional (glucose target: 6-10 mmol/L; n=177 [88.5%]) glucose control. Findings revealed that an increased risk of hospital-acquired infectious, as well as cardiovascular, renal, or neurological complications was not evident in relation to liberal glucose control in critically ill patients with diabetes.
