Hormonal dependence and cancer in systemic lupus erythematosus
Arthritis Care & Research Oct 30, 2019
Cobo-Ibáñez T, Urruticoechea-Arana A, Rúa-Figueroa I, et al. - In this retrospective multicentric study, the researchers estimated the cancer incidence in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and analyzed factors correlated with its onset, differentiating between hormone-sensitive (HS) and non-HS cancers. From the SLE Registry of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology, 3,539 patients (90.4% women) were included. Cancer was evident in 154 at presentation (91% women), 44 HS (100% women). Common factors associated with both HS and non-HS cancers were SLE diagnostic age and period of disease evolution. The authors discovered that patients with SLE, particularly young women, displayed a higher cancer incidence than the Spanish population. The rise could be due to non-HS cancers, which would be related to more cumulative damage with an SLE where more ACE inhibitors are administered.
