Hormonal dependence and cancer in systemic lupus erythematosus
Arthritis Care & Research Sep 25, 2019
Cobo-Ibáñez T, Urruticoechea-Arana A, Rúa-Figueroa I, et al. - Researchers determined the incidence of and investigated any cancer-associated factors in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) differentiating between hormone-sensitive (HS) and non-HS cancers. From the SLE Registry of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology, they included 3,539 patients (90.4% women) in this retrospective multicentric study. Cancer was evident in 154 at presentation (91% women), 44 HS (100% women). According to findings, SLE patients, particularly young women, displayed a higher cancer incidence than the Spanish population. Non-HS cancers might have caused this increase; these cancers may be correlated with an SLE involving greater cumulative damage, where more ACE inhibitors are prescribed. Common factors associated with both HS and non-HS cancers were SLE diagnostic age and period of disease evolution.
