Hormonal dependence and cancer in systemic lupus erythematosus
Arthritis Care & Research Feb 06, 2020
Cobo-Ibanez T, Urruticoechea-Arana A, Rua-Figueroa I, et al. - A retrospective multicenter study was designed to determine the incidence and investigate any cancer-associated factors in individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), differentiating between hormone-sensitive (HS) and non-HS cancers. Researchers recruited a sum of 3,539 individuals (90.4% women), 154 of whom had cancer (91% female), and 44 had HS cancer (100% female). Cancers were categorized as HS (prostate, breast, endometrium, and ovarian) and non-HS (the remainder). The standardized incidence ratio (SIR) was estimated and logistic regression models were established. In individuals with SLE, cancer incidence was higher than in the Spanish population, especially among young women. This improvement might be due to non-HS cancers, which would be correlated with SLE including greater cumulative damage where more ACE inhibitors are prescribed.
