Hormonal contraceptive use and subjective sleep reports in women: An online survey
Journal of Sleep Research Jan 31, 2020
Bezerra AG, Andersen ML, Pires GN, et al. - Given the known hypnogenic effects of female sexual hormones and that in postmenopausal women, the use of hormonal replacement therapy improves sleep quality, researchers here examined how hormonal contraceptive use influences the subjective self-reports of sleep via performing a web-based cross-sectional survey. Participants were 2,055 women between 18 and 40 years old. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale and the Insomnia Severity Index were used as the sleep assessment tools. Inclusion criteria were met by 1,286 participants among the total sample (918 of them were currently taking a hormonal contraceptive). Observations revealed more insomnia symptoms and increased excessive daytime sleepiness among contraceptive users vs women who do not use any hormonal contraceptive method, and lower sleep duration was observed in correlation to progestagen-only therapy.
