Homocysteine concentrations in the cognitive progression of Alzheimer's disease

Experimental Gerontology Dec 15, 2017

Farina N, et al. - In this present study, the physicians investigated the association between hyperhomocystenemia and relevant vitamins as the disease progresses. In Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, an increase in homocysteine was observed as the disease progresses. This increase in homocysteine could not be solely explained by dietary and blood levels of folate and vitamin B12. Other dietary and non-dietary factors could contribute to hyperhomocysteinemia and its toxic effect in AD, which ought to be explored to optimize timely intervention strategies.
