JAMA Feb 13, 2020
Wallace ME, et al. - Researchers intended to describe data of homicide during pregnancy and the postpartum period in Louisiana, 2016-2017. In the United States, maternal mortality is on the rise, mobilizing programmatic and policy responses at local, state, and federal levels. An increasing number of jurisdictions distinguish homicide as a principal cause of death throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period, yet relative to the consideration paid to obstetric causes of death, rigorous examination of mortality from nonobstetric causes during pregnancy and the postpartum period is rare, especially compared with similar studies of women who were not pregnant.
