Home enteral nutrition may prevent myelosuppression of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated by concurrent chemoradiotherapy

Head & Neck Jul 18, 2019

Li X, et al. - During the course of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT), researchers evaluated the impact of home enteral nutrition (HEN) on the myelosuppression of patients with nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). A total of 18 outpatients with NPC administered oral dietary supplementation intervention at home during the course of CCRT were identified as the HEN group, while 36 patients with NPC who had earlier completed CCRT were included as the control group retrospectively. Investigators found that hemoglobin (HB) and red blood cell were reduced in both HEN and control group after CCRT in male patients, while white blood cell (WBC) began to decrease in the control group since week 2 but remained significantly higher than control in the HEN group. During CCRT, HB and WBC in the control group were decreased in female patients, while these indicators were also retained in the HEN group. Surprisingly, after CCRT, all patients with reduced body mass index (<24 kg/m2) experienced a substantial rise in platelet while the HEN group had constant HB and WBC values. The authors concluded that HEN prevents myelosuppression in patients with NPC during CCRT.
