HIV infection and incidence of cardiovascular diseases: An analysis of a large healthcare database
Journal of the American Heart Association Jul 10, 2019
Alonso A, et al. - Using the MarketScan Commercial and Medicare databases, researchers compared people living with HIV (PLWH, n=19,798) to age- and sex-matched uninfected individuals (n=59,302) in terms of cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence, including myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure (HF), atrial fibrillation, peripheral artery disease, stroke and any CVD-related hospitalization. For MI, HF, stroke, atrial fibrillation, peripheral artery disease, and for any CVD hospitalization, the hazard ratios (95% CI) were 1.3, 3.2, 2.7, 1.2, 1.1, and 1.7, respectively, for PLWH vs uninfected controls. Findings revealed an elevated risk of CVD, especially HF and stroke, among PLWH. It is important to develop interventions for cardiovascular health promotion and CVD prevention in view of the aging of the HIV population.
