Histopathological features of juvenile-onset laryngeal papillomatosis related to severity
Head & Neck Jan 15, 2019
El Achkar NVR, et al. - Researchers assessed the retrospective data and biopsies of 36 subjects with juvenile laryngeal papillomatosis (JLP) and 56 with adult laryngeal papillomatosis (ALP) to estimate the correlation of histopathological features of papillomatosis with the degree of severity. Microscopically, they observed a higher incidence of atypical mitosis and mitosis above the basal cells layer of the epithelium in the JLP samples. The mean Derkay score was 10.97 in the JLP group and 8.26 in the ALP group. They also noted an association of respiratory difficulty and tracheostomy to a higher Derkay score in the JLP group. They concluded there was a higher degree of severity in JLP.
