Histopathological examination of removed kidney allografts: Is it useful?: A retrospective cohort study
Transplant International Oct 17, 2020
Bunthof KLW, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective cohort analysis of patients with kidney graft failure ≥ 3 months post-transplantation, to analyze the outcome of routine histopathological assessment of removed allografts. A total of 244 allograft nephrectomies were done in this sample. A pathology report for analysis was available in 197 cases. Gross necrosis precluded adequate interpretation in 21 of the 197 grafts. Among the rest of the 176 allografts, 163 showed the signs of rejection. In 13 cases, original disease recurred. In grafts that were removed following late graft failure, the main histopathological finding was signs of acute and/or chronic rejection. Very rarely, there were unexpected secondary findings. Overall, it was inferred based on the findings that restricting histopathological examination of removed kidney allografts to specific cases is justifiable.
