Histopathological diagnosis of persistent pruritic eruptions associated with adult-onset Still's disease
Histopathology Nov 14, 2018
Qiao J, et al. - As patients with adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) commonly present with persistent pruritic eruptions (PPEs), manifesting with dyskeratotic keratinocytes histologically, researchers investigated the utility of histopathological findings in discriminating among PPEs and other entities presenting with dyskeratotic keratinocytes. They performed a comparison of cutaneous histopathological changes of PPEs associated with AOSD (n=26) with those of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (n=16), dermatomyositis (n=19), and drug eruption (n=16). Outcomes of this retrospective study suggest that PPEs presents with dyskeratotic keratinocytes in the upper 1/3 of the epidermal layer that is a distinctive histopathological reactive pattern. For early diagnosis of AOSD, this pattern seems to be a useful histopathological marker.
