Histopathological and hematological changes in recurrent nasal polyposis
International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology Mar 21, 2019
Brescia G, et al. - Authors investigated the data to examine the histological changes in recurrent chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) in terms of eosinophilic infiltrate, subepithelial edema, goblet cell hyperplasia, and basement membrane thickness. They observed a positive association between all histopathological parameters, and between tissue eosinophil and blood eosinophil counts at primary surgery. They also recorded a correlation of basement membrane thickness with tissue eosinophil count as well as goblet cell hyperplasia at revision surgery. A significantly lower mean tissue eosinophil count in recurrent CRSwNP was noted as compared to the primary disease. They suggested tissue remodeling due to surgical and medical treatments for CRSwNP, a dynamic process comprising important variations in tissue eosinophil counts between primary and recurrent CRSwNP.
