Hip fractures in the oldest old: Comparative study of centenarians and nonagenarians and mortality risk factors
Injury Oct 05, 2018
Barceló M, et al. - Researchers compared the outcomes of centenarian and nonagenarian patients following a hip fracture, and identified risk factors related to in-hospital and post-discharge mortality in both groups. They noted similar in-hospital outcomes in the centenarian patients and nonagenarians; however, but e former group experienced more complications and twice the 3-month and 1-year mortality rate vs the latter. The risk factor most consistently related to in-hospital and post-discharge mortality was the mean number of complications. The authors emphasized the need for improved care in very old patients for the prevention of complications.
