Hip arthroplasty after hip arthroscopy: Are short-term outcomes affected?- a systematic review of the literature
Arthroscopy Sep 15, 2019
Rosinsky PJ, et al. - In this study conducted at the American Hip Institute, researchers analyzed published literature concerning intraoperative measures, patient-reported results, and complications of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with or without a history of prior hip arthroscopy. The included publications were identified from PubMed and Cochrane Library databases and were comparative in nature and incorporated postoperative outcome measures. They excluded opinion articles, review articles, cadaveric studies, case reports, or technique articles. A total of 8 studies, including 305 hips with a THA after prior hip arthroscopy, with 502 matched control hips, were included. Findings revealed comparable short-term patient-reported outcome measures among those who underwent total hip arthroplasty with a prior history of an ipsilateral hip arthroscopy and those undergoing primary THA. As far as differences in complication rates between patients with a history of prior arthroscopy and patients undergoing primary THA were concerned, no conclusion could be reached, but it is still crucial to take into account the likely implications of a prior hip procedure on postoperative stability and infection rates. Overall, the safety of hip arthroplasty after a prior hip arthroscopy was shown, with comparable short-term results to primary arthroplasty.
