Higher surgical morbidity for ulcerative colitis patients in the era of biologics

Abelson JS, et al. - Differences in surgical approach and postoperative outcomes were investigated for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) before and after the introduction of biologic therapy. Analyzing an administrative, all-payer, all-age group database located in New York State, researchers noted that surgery for patients with UC more frequently requires multiple procedures since the introduction of biologic agents in 2005. For patients having surgery recently, worse postoperative morbidity was noted during the index hospitalization, at 90-day and 1-year follow up, despite robust adjustments.
