Higher serum vitamin D levels are associated with protective serum cytokine profiles in patients with ulcerative colitis

Gubatan J, et al. - Vitamin D has immune modulating effects on cytokines. In this current study, researchers tested the notion that this beneficial role of vitamin D on ulcerative colitis (UC) is mediated through anti-inflammatory serum cytokine profiles. They found that vitamin D was related to anti-inflammatory serum cytokine profiles. In addition, they noted that in patients with UC, the protective impacts of higher serum vitamin D levels may be mediated by anti-inflammatory cytokine patterns.
