Higher long-term visit-to-visit glycemic variability predicts new-onset atrial fibrillation in patients with diabetes mellitus
Cardiovascular Diabetology Jul 28, 2021
Hsu JC, Yang YY, Chuang SL, et al. - Using a database from National Taiwan University Hospital, researchers undertook this cohort study to determine if glycemic variability (GV) can elevate the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF). This analysis involved 27,246 adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). For AF and transient ischemic accident/ischemic stroke, an incidence rate of 21.31 and 13.71 per 1000 person-year was estimated, respectively. Participants were observed for a medium follow-up span of 70.7 months. Findings revealed an independent link of high GV with the development of new-onset AF in patients suffering from T2DM. The advantages of maintaining stable glycemic levels to improve clinical results warrants further studies.
