Higher incidence rates of hypothyroidism and late TSH rise in preterm very-low-birth-weight infants at a tertiary care center
Hormone Research in Paediatrics Apr 16, 2018
Tfayli H, et al. - Experts sought to survey the compliance with second newborn screening to detect delayed TSH rise in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) preterm infants at a tertiary care center. Additionally, they intended to estimate the rate of atypical hypothyroidism. As per the findings, higher rates of early and late TSH rise in this VLBW population were found than those in the literature. This could be attributed to the use of povidone-iodine disinfectants. Findings displayed that the yield of a second TSH screening was high hinting towards the necessity for vigilance in screening VLBW preterm infants.
